Introduction: The War against Labor We are in the fight of our lives. The hostile onslaught against U.S. labor that was launched after the Second World War and redoubled in the 1980s is entering a new phase that will profoundly influence the future of all working people in North America. How we respond to this latest assault of capitalism might well prove to be the pivotal contest of modern times. The iron law of capitalist production--the zero-sum relationship between profit and wages --is becoming more skewed every day. During the last half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, U.S. capitalism consolidated its control of the existing political apparatus to maximize profits at the expense of the working people of this nation and abroad through a protracted war of attrition.
